Can you believe it’s already the last day of VBS! We’ve had so much fun learning about international and local missions with you, and now we get to learn about neighborhood missions! Jesus commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 23:39), and today we’re going to learn “Who is our neighbor?” and “How can we show love to them?” We’ll think back to Monday’s story of the Good Samaritan to learn who our neighbors are.
We’ll also get to bake a special treat while we think about how God’s love transforms us; just like all the ingredients are mixed together and transformed into a delicious cake!
Our craft today also involves some mixing and transformation! Follow the recipe to make chalk paint, and then you can paint a special picture for you and your family, or you can paint one for your neighbor!
Bible Story: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37)
Missions: Baking with Love
Putting in the right ingredients is important for baking, just like you need the right things to help in God’s mission. The Fruits of the Spirit are a good place to start when thinking about how to spread God’s love to others. Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control are all things that help us live out God’s mission and love others every day. God wants to transform us! When we obey the teachings of Jesus, we are transformed by God’s Spirit & our lives become something beautiful in God’s eyes. Just like when baking, all the flour, milk, sugar, butter, and eggs are mixed together and transformed into something new: a delicious cake!
Activities/Games
Bake Something to Share
In your packet you’ll find a baking mix. Put in all the right ingredients to make something wonderful! Share with someone else!
“GO and do the same!” Activity
Have everyone gather in a circle. One person does a silly dance move or crazy movement, and then shouts, “GO and do the same!” Everyone else then has to copy that person’s movement. Go around the circle until everyone has had a turn.
Flashlight Tag – Shine Your Light!
One player is IT, and they are given a flashlight. The rest of the players hide while IT closes their eyes and counts to ten. Then players can run and try to find new hiding spots, but if IT shines the flashlight on them, they’re out! The last player in the game becomes the new IT and the game starts over.
Craft: Making Chalk Paint
When you have all the right ingredients, you can make all kinds of fun things, not just cake! Today we have a recipe to make our own chalk paint! To make Chalk Paint all you need is:
1 Cup Water + 1 Cup Cornstarch + A few drops of food coloring
Mix water and food coloring together, until there are no lumps. Then add drops of food coloring until your paint is the color you want!
Now PAINT! This will work on paper or on your sidewalk outside. What can you paint on your sidewalk that would share the Good News?
