This Sunday our text recounts the remarkable story of two disciples who leave Jerusalem on Resurrection Sunday afternoon. Yet on their walk to Emmaus they have an amazing encounter with a person on the road. You will find the story beginning in Luke 24:13.
Useless talk—dead Jesus and empty tomb
Chloe and I cannot bear to stay;
No hope in Jerusalem to hold us,
Emmaus, seven miles distant, walking disappointment away.
A stranger on the road, Messiah talk and scripture lessons
Lighting passion with burning words spoken;
Law and prophets reframed that which we held true.
Yet nothing prepared us for the illumination of bread broken.
