For Our Kids- August 16

During the month of August, we’re going to explore a spiritual exercise together each week- something you can practice together, as a family! These are practices that are designed to give attention to spiritual matters and in doing so, make your spirit strong. Just like we exercise our bodies, our spirits need exercise too!

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE- Slowing

Today’s Spiritual Exercise is Slowing!

Slowing

Ms. Abbey & I have discovered some slow hobbies while we’ve had time at home. Listen in to see what our hobbies are- and then think about something you might do at home today that is “slow”.

“Be still and know that I am God.” -Psalm 46:10

Many of you are starting school this week and that might be something that makes you feel like you need to rush and hurry & WORRY. So take some time today to SLOW DOWN together and trust God with your worries. God is our KING & God is worthy!

Take a hike together as a family or grill out today! Play a board game or do a puzzle! Enjoy the ways God has provided for you & thank God for being faithful in care.

BIBLE STORY: Samuel Anoints David

“God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.” -1 Samuel 16:7

God chose David, but Samuel couldn’t SEE why! God sees to the heart- and God sees the UNSEEN- about David & about YOU too.

TALK ABOUT IT: Tell about a time someone judged you based on the outside, instead of based on your heart or time you judged based on the outside. How did that feel? The God who created and LOVES you knows your heart. What will God enjoy when God looks at your heart? Take turns telling each other something you see in each person’s heart and admire. What can you ask God to clear away from your heart?

CRAFT- Crayon Resist Paintings

Materials: white paper, white crayon, watercolors (diluted paint)

Give each person a piece of white paper & white crayon. Draw something that is real, but is unseen. (My kids thought of wind or air & then moved on to heaven, courage, kindness, & love)

Hold up your papers to share together. Didn’t you draw anything?! It doesn’t LOOK like it!

Next, use watercolors or dilute some paint with water, and paint over your drawing.

What is on the paper is UNSEEN!
The unseen is REVEALED!
WOW!

TALK ABOUT IT: How could this remind us of our Bible story today? Why are these things “unseen”? When something is “unseen” is it less real? How can we take time to be aware of things that are unseen?
