The Birth of the Messiah (Matthew 1-2)

The story of the birth of Jesus in popular imagination is a combination of details from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Last year, we focused our December study on the Gospel of Luke but this year the Gospel of Matthew will provide our texts.  Matthew provides a unique storyline starting with a genealogy that includes women, non-Jews, and others of questionable character; Jesus as Messiah, the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy; and Christ as deliverer of mankind from sin as God delivered his people out of Egypt in the Exodus.

  • December 2 – Matthew 1:1-17         “Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham”
  • December 9 – Matthew 1:18-25                 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive”
  • December 16 – Matthew 2:1-12    And you, O Bethlehem…from you shall come a ruler”
  • December 23 – Matthew 2:13-23              “Out of Egypt have I called my son”
